Weekly Bulletin

January 21, 2024 - 3rd Sunday after the Epiphany

Welcome in the name of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. If you are visiting, we are glad that you are here and kindly ask that you sign our guest book at the sanctuary doors. If you would like to become a member please speak to the Pastor. In case of illness, the Pastor should be informed. He will always be glad to speak with those who are confronted with problems of a spiritual nature. The time before worship is a quiet time for prayer and meditation to prepare for worship. Please see the inside cover of the hymnal for prayers and page 329f to prepare for Holy Communion. God bless you as we gather before our gracious God!

The Lord Calls Us to Himself by the Preaching of Repentance in His Name

When “the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time,” sending him to preach judgment against the great city of Nineveh, “Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD” (Jonah 3:1, 3). By this preaching, the people were brought to repentance. Because they “believed God,” as He spoke to them through His prophet, “they turned from their evil way” and were spared “the disaster that he had said he would do to them” (Jonah 3:5, 10). St. Paul also warns that “the appointed time has grown very short” (1 Cor. 7:29). Therefore, while we live in this world and deal with it, we are not to cling to it, nor put our trust in it, for “the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Cor. 7:31). Rather, give “your undivided devotion to the Lord” (1 Cor. 7:35). When our Lord Jesus Christ comes and is proclaimed in the Gospel, “the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand” (Mark 1:14–15). Therefore, He still calls men and sends them to become “fishers of men” with the net of that Gospel (Mark 1:17).

CONFIRMATION:  George and Colleen are confirmed this morning in the Christian faith and we welcome them into communicant membership.  We rejoice with this couple from Trenton that the Holy Spirit has granted them the same faith as He has given to us.  May God bless our oneness in the holy faith and our time together.  George’s confirmation verse is John 15:b “Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”  Colleen’s verse is Isaiah 43:1b  “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

A DIVINE CALL: from St. Peter’s in Stratford was extended to Pastor Hetzel and on Nov.26 he accepted it.  Please pray for Pastor, that the Lord would bless his move and his ministry there and for Grace Lutheran Oshawa, that our gracious Lord would provide a faithful Shepherd to guide and feed His flock to life eternal.
